Girl, no man is worth lowering your standards…I’m speaking from experience
This is part 1 of IDK how many…
Let’s revisit the past for a quick moment.
In 2008, I lived in Louisiana. I tried dating, but it was really hard for a picky woman like myself.
I tried meeting the locals, however, the strong country accent created somewhat of a language barrier – so that wouldn’t work.
I went out with a long-distance truck driver, but he was gone most of the time, and I didn’t really trust him – so, on to the next.
I found a nice guy who took me out on a movie date. I turned to him in frustration about 30 minutes in because he was snoring, only to be surprised that he was a mouth breather – and it was loud. So, yea, that wasn’t going to work either.
I didn’t give up hope though. I kept trying, and there were a lot of thank-you-next moments for various reasons.
Eventually, I met someone who I could understand, lived locally, was attractive and breathed through his nose. I know, I know my standards had been lowered, and my pickiness went out the window. I’ll admit I sacrificed a lot for the sake of company and physical attention.
The thing we had most in common was music. Yep, that was about it. I was raised by two loving parents, he was raised by his grandmother and had mommy and daddy issues. I was college educated, he was pursuing an associate’s degree at the local community college (never graduated). I had a squeaky clean record, he had a rap sheet and was still doing questionable things. I didn’t have kids, he had a child he didn’t take care of. I had my own car, and my own place, he didn’t have a car and lived with family members. I had a job, he had , ummm, an independent narcotics business. But he was smart and had potential – so I was willing to look pass all the previously mentioned things.
SHUT UP! Stop judging me.
This should’ve never been a relationship. But I was young, alone and…stupid – I’ll just say what you’re thinking and what I know now.
A few months in, I found out he had anger issues and was cheating.
I left promptly – with no intentions of looking back.
A few weeks later, I’m living my best life during a girls’ weekend in New Orleans, I ordered a Hand Grenade, took a few sips and felt sick immediately.
Thinking it was a fluke, I thought nothing of it.
Later that day, we had Popeye’s Chicken for dinner. Took a few bites, and I sprinted to call Earl.
I spent the weekend assuming I had some sort of stomach bug and kept my meals light and alcohol free.
A few weeks after returning to my apartment, Aunt Flo was late.
Took a test and found out I was pregnant.
I won’t type out all the expletives that went through my mind, but I’m sure you could imagine.
As luck would have it, I had just met someone who was a lot more compatible with me, educated, employed and family-oriented.
And now, I have to tell him that I was pregnant by someone else.
I cried. New guy comforted me, and he stuck it out for longer than expected.
But because “morning” sickness kept me sick more times than I felt well, guilt crept in, and I felt terrible for keeping this innocent man around for all my issues.
I let him go, and called the ex to tell him he’s about to be a father – again.
You know what…I’m gone stop right here, because this story is about to get long and complicated.
Come on cliffhanger! I’ll be back next week. insert evil laughter
